CHAPTER TEN

Miss Scarlet in the Exam Room with a Hex

At Malisha’s exclamation, Wilhelm and Carmen rushed forward to take in the sight of what Malisha had seen. Vega hated to be left behind, but Gabby was like a ball and chain. Never had Vega been hindered by a child when investigating a murder. Teenagers, yes, but not an eleven-year-old.

Vega didn’t want to traumatize the girl even more and force her to see another dead body.

She also didn’t want to put Gabby in danger by leaving the girl alone. Frustration multiplied in her like an abundance of magical dust bunnies breeding discontent.

Ultimately, Vega decided she needed to see what had happened to Qin. If there was anyone present who could figure out what had happened, Vega concluded it would be herself. She had uncovered killers in the past.

This room might have been full of academics who were adept at research and practicing magic, but they were also completely unprepared for working under fire. Otherwise, she suspected a man intelligent enough to pass the written section of the exam would have considered using magic to exit from the room. Any other man might have examined the wards before trying to blast them with the brute force of a kinetic spell that would get him injured.

More exclamations came from the alcove where the others had gathered.

“Don’t touch him,” Carmen said, her voice rising over the others. “I’m trying to—”

Wilhelm cut her off. “I need to feel for a pulse. Or do you think investigating is more important than making sure he’s dead?”

Vega hoped Malisha was going to keep those two from killing each other. Vega tried to coax Gabby forward, but the girl shook her head.

“He’s obviously dead,” Carmen said. “I’m using a spell to search for fingerprints before anyone touches him. I can’t do that after you manhandle him.”

Vega supposed that was a practical rationale, but she would have used the fingerprint spell after she palpated for a pulse.

Wilhelm snorted. “Fingerprints are useless when some people here are wearing gloves.”

“Don’t look at me like that!” Malisha said with indignation.

“Come on,” Vega said to Gabby. “I need to see what they’re seeing.”

Gabby cringed back. “No, I don’t want to see another dead body without a face.”

“Mr. Qin probably has a face,” Vega said with as much reassurance as she could muster.

“Um . . . no.” Mumbly stepped out from the alcove of shelves up ahead. “He looks like the other corpse.”

Now Vega was truly intrigued.

“You don’t have to look.” Vega tugged on Gabby’s hand. “Just come with me to the end of that section of bookshelves where I can see you.”

Gabby dragged her feet.

“How could this happen twice? This isn’t a coincidence,” Carmen said.

“Maybe it’s contagious,” Mumbly said uncertainly.

“It’s obviously murder.” Wilhelm’s voice rose in panic. “We’re all locked in a room with someone bent on murdering everyone here.”

Vega kept an arm firmly around Gabby’s shoulders as she attempted to usher her forward.

“I bet it’s part of our test,” Malisha insisted. “Dorcus said this would be a collaboration.
